What’s Been Going On?

So many things to tell you but for now I won’t overwhelm you.

So many things will be changing for me in the near future.

Soon to be living alone. I don’t think I’ve ever lived alone. Might be refreshing. Then again Harley will be there to keep me company.

May be changing jobs soon. Which could be a relief because the Justice Dept may be investigating the owners of the apartment community I work at.

So a major change in life and lifestyle is coming. I wish I could see into the future to see if it all works out for the best.

On top of this my niece’s husband was killed in a motorcycle accident. He leaves behind her and 5 young kids. Then my oldest sister has a grim diagnosis with her brain cancer.

How much more can you take before you pop?

Then again you focus on the positive and keep moving forward.

Hope everyone is happy and safe.

Talk to you very soon.

Too much time on your hands or not enough time? I wish I had more.

Harley is doing well. We’re both over this winter as I am sure most of you are too. I hope everyone has been safe, warm, and well.

Take care and hopefully we’ll be posting a longer blog soon.

2013 in review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2013 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

A San Francisco cable car holds 60 people. This blog was viewed about 1,100 times in 2013. If it were a cable car, it would take about 18 trips to carry that many people.

Click here to see the complete report.

Now for something completely different…

Let me get right to the point, I am currently unemployed.  I quit my last job after 4 months.  To make that long story short it just didn’t work out.  Prior to that I was unemployed for 9 months.  At least at that time I was getting unemployment money coming in.  Now nothing.

I am temping when they call me or tell me they have something for me.  However the jobs don’t pay much and I always seem to be driving for over an hour each way.  Hardly economical.

I keep hearing that Houston has one of the best economies in the nation and that housing is booming but I don’t see it.  Part of the problem may be that I have over educated myself.  I know that sounds like I think highly of myself and I do to a certain degree but I have certifications in affordable housing.

Affordable housing is just that.  I am certified in getting people qualified for the programs.  It is a lot of paperwork and most normal people do not like paperwork but I do.  I guess that makes me not normal.

Anyway when I say I have over educated myself I mean this:  Apartment communities need tons of leasing agents.  They need less assistant mangers.  Then less managers.  Less district managers, etc. etc.  So when you reach a certain level the jobs are fewer.

I keep being told that with my certifications and experience I should be finding jobs easily.  That is not the case.  Although I am getting interviews I am not getting offers.  The one I did get would require a move that I am not ready to make.

So I keep sending out the resume and pray I don’t lose my car or my house in the meantime.  As of this blog I have a second interview for a job I really want and need.  I pray they see something in me that they just have to have at their company.

To bring it back to the bird, which is the reason for this blog, he is much happier now that we spend everyday together.  I guess that is the one good thing to come out of this.  He was not doing so well with me being gone for 8 hours a day while I had my last job.  Hopefully he will regrow some feathers.

Oh and that job I have the 2nd interview for would have me working from home.

Hope you all are well.

Couldn’t leave you without at least a video of Harley

California Flocks – Eat Acorns and Avocados!!!

This post is dedicated to a YouTube channel I recently found.  It is called “California Flocks.”  Visit the page here.

Their “about” page says “A channel dedicated to the admiration of real naturalized parrots of California.”

Basically this YouTube user posts videos of non-native parrots located in California.  There are many great videos that are not really long and have minimal commentary.  The commentary usually only consists of telling you about the parrots you are seeing and what they are up to.

I could literally watch all day.  Here is a video of all the species this person saw during 2012.

When I saw this YouTube page I thought it was really cool that California has parrots.  I am sure where I live in Texas we have some too but no one has dedicated a YouTube page to document them…..yet!

All are great and very educational but I really want to focus on two videos that they posted.

This video focuses on exotic feeding but one of the things that stood out to me was the fact that these parrots eat acorns.  Do a search to see if parrots can eat acorns and they are on all food lists as toxic.  So this begs the question how can these parrots eat them and be okay?  Someone told me they eat clay and that helps absorb toxins but in all the videos California Flocks has posted they have never shown any of the flocks in California eating any clay.  So that can’t be it.  My bird will walk across my yard sampling everything and I know he has eaten a lot of acorns here.  Maybe there are certain species of acorns that are toxic?  Maybe this issue with acorns need to be reevaluated.  I don’t know.

Here is another that actually kinda blew my mind.

The title alone made me do a double take.  Again, search for avocados and parrots and you will see them on the toxic list and maybe even listed as deadly to parrots.  SO how can these birds eat them and be okay?  On the video the commentator says that maybe the issue is bird species specific or avocado species specific and maybe the same goes with acorns.  Either way I do not plan on making guacamole and feeding it to Harley.  Still it begs the same questions above.  Is a slight amount okay?  Has it been just assumed avocados are bad?  Is there a study with parrots and these plants or is it info that was just passed on and taken as fact?

These questions are interesting to say the least and these videos are a great resource for what parrots actually eat in the wild.  What I found while watching these videos is that these parrots eat more flowers than I ever thought.  You can see that in this last video.  It is over 12 minutes but hopefully by this point you love this YouTube channel and won’t mind.  (This video documents all the parrot species currently thriving in California.)

Again if you like parrots and bird watching you won’t find a better YouTube channel.  Subscribe to it for updates.

Of course you can subscribe to Harley’s YouTube channel as well by visiting www.harleybird.com  There you can also friend him on Facebook and Twitter.  There is also a link to the bird toys he sells on eBay.

Thank you for reading.  Please share and if you have any questions or comments please leave them below.

In one of my last posts I talked about flight training Harley.    In the post was a video of Harley. I posted my blog and video to a bird forum and people were bent all out of shape.  You can click the link to read the exchanges.

Naturally people won’t always agree with you.  I am not concerned about that.  What concerned me was the poster Parrotz.  He was one the more vocal people on the board and yet if you visit his website you see lots of birds with no leash and no protection outside.

I see no difference in what I was doing and what he does.  So if he says what I do is wrong then what he does is wrong.

As I stated on the thread I don’t feel that I do anything wrong nor do I put my bird in any danger.  Accidents can and do happen.  Such is life.

I have had people go so far as to say it is wrong to let my bird walk on the ground because of germs.  I think that is a bit too much.

What do you think?

Thanks for reading and commenting.

New Tricks?

I mentioned a few posts ago that Harley and I were going to try and learn some tricks. Below is what we came up with.

(In 720HD – a litte over 1 min.)

Not exactly recall training I don’t think, but since I don’t have a helper this is the best I can do. They say flying is an intergal part to have a healthy and happy bird so we are going to keep at this. The next step is to get him to fly back. Knowing Harley that is going to be way down the road. I will also get better at the immediate reward for doing good.

I used to just toss Harley in the air as you can see below.

(Also in 720HD – little over 1 min.)

We’ll continue to do this as well. I think the more I get him moving around the happier he will be.

What do you think? Did you like the video? What can I do better camera wise? I think it’s not too bad considering I am the director, camera crew, and editor. LOL!!!

What did you think of Harley? Did he look like he was enjoying himself? Did I put him in any danger? What would you do better? Any questions?

All feedback below or on the youtube page is welcome.

Thank you for taking the time to watch and read.

Until next time,
Jim and Harley
