It has been a while…

Time has flown since the last time I wrote on my blog.  I’ve missed you all that are kind enough to visit and comment.  I hope you all have been well.  I could update you on all the issues I am dealing with and touch on the last items I mentioned in my last post but I’d rather not at this time.  I may type up a proper follow up to that post but not now.  Instead…

Here is the latest pic of Harley and I.

We were outside checking out the garden when it decided to pour what seemed like gallons of rain all at once.  Since it was really hot we agreed that playing in the rain was okay this time.

Some flowers are blooming.

Just a few random touches of color that make me happy as I walk around my yard.

Of course Harley is here looking good as ever.

Not to long ago we were able to get some plumbs from our tree.  In all got about 4 dozen plumbs off this tree.  Not to bad.

This guy, who lives in Amarillo TX with my brother-in-law, may end up in my home.  His name is Pepe and he’s a white capped pionus.  He may stay in Amarillo so we’ll see.

Not sure how much you know about the weather here in Houston lately but aside from today’s downpour it’s been really wet.  Flooding in fact.  My yard still has standing water.  Not good for the fruit treats but the mosquitoes love it.  I think they are having their best year ever.  The frogs too.

Due to all the rain this guy decided to come say hello.  Unfortunately he’s not a nice guy and had to leave this world.  I’m sure his family misses him.  They have my condolences.

So that was an update of sorts.  I leave you woth this goofy shot.   I’ve been leaving more and more of the orange peel on the orange so Harley can have the fun of getting to the tasty center.  Supposed to help keep his mind sharp.  Not sure if it’s working.

Hope you all have been well.  Take care.  Now to read up on all I’ve missed from my friends here.

Tropical Tuesday

Looks like I have a wild cat living in my yard.

I heart you.

Gonna keep the words brief and just let the pics speak for themselves.
Went to the Houston Zoo. Captured rhino butt.
A real happy crow.
Beautiful giraffe.
Sleepy owl.
Tiger tongue.
Lion tongue.
We had so much rain that my yard was a pond and some ducks were loving it.
Of course Harley had to pose for the camera.

And this lizard just needed to stretch and chill for a bit.

Hope you enjoyed the pics. If you want more details about the pics please ask in the comment section.

Talk to you soon,
Jim & Harley

Too much time on your hands or not enough time? I wish I had more.

Harley is doing well. We’re both over this winter as I am sure most of you are too. I hope everyone has been safe, warm, and well.

Take care and hopefully we’ll be posting a longer blog soon.

2013 in review

The stats helper monkeys prepared a 2013 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

A San Francisco cable car holds 60 people. This blog was viewed about 1,100 times in 2013. If it were a cable car, it would take about 18 trips to carry that many people.

Pecans are nearly ready

Everyday Harley and I go out to harvest the pecans that have fallen from the trees.  Already we cannot keep up with them.  Of course Harley eats more than he puts in the bag but even after a while he’s full.  Last year due to the drought there were no pecans.  I guess the trees are making up for it now.

Harley and I will be appearing at the Pet Festival in Old Town Spring this weekend.  It is so much fun.  So many dogs and pet folks to see.  Check out their site for the list of vendors and activities.  If you are here come say hi.  One of the coolest things to see there is the Dock Dogs.  Dogs of all sizes jumping into the water is an amazing sight.  Check out their site for videos.

Harley and I can’t wait to meet lots of new friends and bring smiles to people’s faces.

Hope everyone is having a great October.

Pecans are on their way

Here is Harley enjoying some unripe pecans.

These are from a branch that fell.  This poor tree must not be feeling so well.  It keeps losing branches.  Luckily I have 7 other pecan trees so there still should be a good crop this year.  I need to find out when the normally ripen although they usually say you’ll know because they start falling off the tree.  I’d just like to be prepared.

If you’d like some sent to ya just let me know.  🙂

Today in Spring TX it is real windy.  Not sure if that is due to Isaac or just wind.  The unfortunate side effect of it being hot and windy is that it dries out my citrus trees and causes the fruit to split.  It works them same as it does with your skin I guess.

I thought my plants were being attacked by disease but luckily that is not the case.  What I found via Google is they split because of moisture and the lack of it.  We get some rain and then the next day it is windy like today.  So the water is absorbed by the fruit of the plant but the skin of the fruit gets dried out because of the wind and can’t expand to accommodate the fruit absorbing more water and then it splits.  In order to combat this it said to water evenly.  I have to work on that.

This creature did freak me out.  At first I thought it was a snake.  Figuring out it was a caterpillar wasn’t any more pleasant.  Sorry but I did have to eliminate it because a lot of them eat plants and cause disease and that’s not good.  If anyone can tell me what this really was that would be great.

Hope everyone is well and those in the path of Isaac are safe.
