Meet Rob Lowe!!!

How cute am I?

Rob Lowe is the name of my 4 year old female ferret. I have always liked the idea of traditional boy names being used for girls. My fav author Anne Rice was given the name Howard Allen O’Brien when she was born. I always thought that was cool. And Rob Lowe had been on the news for some reason and so it seemed like a good idea and now it makes me chuckle.

This ferret was supposed to be a animal that I took care of and found a home for but she found her way into my heart. I think I knew from the beginning that she was going to live with me but I was in denial.

A friend called and asked if I wanted a ferret. I said no initially because one of the last things my mom said to me was for me to not get anymore pets. I already broke that promise with the parrot. This friend then asked if I could take care of it until I found it a home. I agreed.

I get her home and set up in her cage. See seems very shy and so I give her time to settle in.

Now, I have a roommate and between us we already have 3 dogs, 1 cat, and a parrot. Adding one more pet I knew was going to be tough. I decided to hide the ferret from the roommate. It wasn’t the best choice I have ever made but I thought it was the best option until I found a home for her.

Two weeks passed and I was still managing to keep the secret. Well…my roommate has a toy poodle. I don’t know if all poodles are like his but his poodle named Franky has always been extremely curious. From day one he knew, saw, or smelled something that caught his interest and it was in my room. It was a battle to keep him out. I knew as long as I kept my door shut everything was fine…

One day while watching TV with the roommate wonders out loud where his dog is. I didn’t think much of it but started trying to remember if I closed my door. I start to sweat. Turns out I hadn’t. Next thing I know the roommate, James, is screaming what was this, get it out, how long has it been here, etc.

Turns out now this same person tells me every other day how much he loves this ferret so it all worked out.

Here is a video of Robbie running around outside. I love the sound of joy she makes. It’s like I have a real live squeaky toy.

I read that ferrets are smelly but this sweetheart smells….sweet. It is hard to explain but her “odor” smells kind of sweet to me. Others might not agree.

Another thing I did not know about ferrets is that they are prone to all sorts of illnesses. This little girl has adrenal disease or adrenal cancer. What that does is cause loss of hair on the outside. Inside it is causing havoc to all sorts of sex hormones. One way to help fix it is through costly surgery that of course has risks. Melatonin can help slow the progression of the disease and that is the course I have taken.

How many pets do you have? What types? What are the stories of how they enhance your life?

I have always been interested in hedgehogs and reptiles (not snakes) but I know that I am at my limit on the number of pets and people that can live in my home.
